Latest Update: Lagos State Will not Hesistate to Shut Down Schools Again if there is a Spike in New COVID-19 Cases.

The Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, has disclosed that the state government will not hesitate to shut schools if there is a spike in COVID-19 cases after the reopening of schools.

She made this known during a two-day training for school leaders and educators on the sustainable approach to the safe reopening of public and private schools in Lagos State.

She said, “Schools must be willing and ready to close or shut down briefly should there be a case of COVID-19 occurrence in the school premises. It is not enough to reopen but to remain open since some schools all over the world had to shut down after reopening due to a spike in the pandemic. 

She urged school leaders to have qualitative safety plans that would help protect students, teachers, and workers when schools reopen in the state. 

She also advised schools to have flexible teaching and learning plans where students and teachers who felt sick could teach or learn from home via online platforms. 

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that final year students in tertiary institutions in the state will resume first before students on other levels as from Monday September 14th, 2020. 

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that all primary and secondary schools will not resume on September 21st, 2020 as earlier announced. 

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo Olu disclosed this at a media briefing on Saturday and also shared the information on their social media accounts. 

Tertiary institutions as well as primary and secondary schools have been shut since March after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

According to the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, this afternoon, he directed all Lagos tertiary Institutions to re-open on September 14th, 2020 while Primary & secondary schools to remain shut till further notice.

Meanwhile, Primary and secondary schools are also tentatively scheduled to re-open from September 21st, 2020. 

NB: This decision is not cast in stone and is subject to review.
